When you look for sinkhole activity it is found not only in the United States but throughout the world. It may be due to water constantly draining into subterranean caves, as those of the acquifer, or due to the rupture of water mains (due to wear or accidents). In all instances the sinkholes are created by the hollowing out of the surface structure due to the geology of the area. Sinkholes originate beneath the surface when groundwater moves through the limestone and erodes cavities in the bedrock. While the cavities are full of water, nothing happens, but if the water-table drops due to drought, it may result in the surface collapsing, causing a sinkhole.
Florida has more sinkholes than any other state in the nation, but they are also abundant in Texas, Alabama, Missouri, Kentucky, Tennessee and Pen-
nsylvania. However, there have been extensive and recurring sinkholes in Palmyra, Pennsylvania and the area was called the Sinkhole Capital of that state.
According to some experts in geology, quite a few of the small lakes in the nation have been created by sinkholes. In fact, Lake Jackson, in Tallahassee is famous for being a disappearing lake - it has disappeared loosing its water, fish and alligators for at least four times since 1907.
When sinkholes appear near or under exhisting houses, the fear is imminent and sometimes they can not be repaired unless extensive measures are taken to provide support for the structure and many times, pins or piers are needed in addition to grout to fill any spaces below it - this should be done under the supervision and certification of qualified engineers who deal with foundation repairs.
